It goes without saying that the New York financial and real estate industries are among the most successful in the world. The U.S. economy is unofficially centered in the city, and real estate has been on a tear for more than a decade. Fashion is another important part of New York City's economy and culture. Technology is well represented in New York City. While California has Silicon Valley, New York's new media is referred to as "Silicon Alley," although it isn't nearly as bustling as before the Internet economy collapsed three years ago. During the 1980s, film production declined in the city due to the high costs to film here. This changed in the 1990s under the administration of Mayor Giuliani. New York City has 145 studios and stages and 35 radio stations. More than 200 newspapers have offices here, and 350 consumer magazines are headquartered in the City.

There are several industries that have a strong presence in New Jersey.
One of the biggest is undoubtedly the pharmaceutical industry. Some of the largest drug companies in the world are either based or have major facilities and offices in the Garden State.
The telecommunications industry is also heavily represented. Bell Labs - now part of Lucent, a spinoff of AT&T - is based in New Jersey and largely responsible for creating much of the technological foundation that drives the networking, computing and software technologies that the world's economy is so reliant upon today. Bell Labs' history is so influential upon contemporary technology it is nearly impossible to overstate it.

However, the fact is that small businesses in the U.S. represent 99.7% of all employers, they employ half of all private sector employees, pay 44.3% of total U.S. private payroll and generate 60% to 80% of net new jobs annually.
