Summary: Whether you're considering moving to Basking Ridge or are already below, here is a short history to help you understand how it has evolved into the place it is today.

Basking Ridge, a picturesque community nestled in the heart of Somerset County, boasts a rich history that dates back to its origins in the 1720s. Initially a settlement within Bernards Township, the area was first inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans before European settlers, primarily of British and Scottish descent, established roots.

The name "Basking Ridge" was adopted due to an early incident involving a local landowner who observed animals basking in the sun on a ridge. As the community grew, it became a hub for colonial life. The Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church, established in 1717, is a testament to the town's historical significance, with its churchyard being the resting place of notable figures, including Dr. Samuel Kennedy, a prominent colonial-era educator.

During the Revolutionary War, Basking Ridge played a strategic role, with General George Washington's army encamping in the area. The famous Washington Oak, under which Washington reportedly held council, stood until 2017, symbolizing the town's connection to American history.

The 19th and 20th centuries saw Basking Ridge evolve from a farming community to a suburban haven, with the arrival of the railroad and later, the establishment of corporate headquarters, such as AT&T. Today, Basking Ridge is known for its excellent schools, beautiful parks, and a commitment to preserving its historical heritage, making it an attractive destination for families and individuals seeking a blend of small-town charm and suburban convenience.
