Summary: It's helpful for people considering moving to Meriden to understand it's history and how it has developed into the community it is today.

Meriden, Connecticut, known as "The Silver City," has a rich history that dates back to its establishment in 1806. Originally part of the neighboring town of Wallingford, it became an independent parish in 1727. The city's growth was spurred by the construction of the Hartford and New Haven Railroad in the 1830s, which connected Meriden to larger markets and facilitated the transport of goods.

During the 19th century, Meriden earned its nickname due to its prominence in the manufacture of silver and cutlery. The city was home to several influential companies, including the Meriden Britannia Company, which later became part of the International Silver Company. This industry's success led to economic growth and an influx of immigrants seeking employment, which diversified the city's cultural landscape.

In the 20th century, Meriden continued to evolve, with manufacturing remaining a key industry. However, the city also faced the challenges of deindustrialization and economic shifts. Despite these changes, Meriden has worked to preserve its history, with landmarks like the Solomon Goffe House, the Curtis Memorial Library, and the Meriden Green showcasing its past.

Today, Meriden is a vibrant community that honors its history while looking towards the future. With ongoing downtown revitalization efforts and a commitment to improving quality of life, Meriden remains an attractive place for residents and those considering making it their home.
