Summary: It's helpful for people considering moving to New Providence to understand it's history and how it has developed into the community it is today.

New Providence, a borough in Union County, New Jersey, has a rich history that dates back to the early 18th century. Originally settled by Puritans from Long Island and New England, the area was known as "Turkey" or "Turkey Town," due to the presence of wild turkeys in the region. The name New Providence was inspired by the survivors of a shipwreck who, upon safely reaching the area, felt it was through divine providence.

The borough's history is closely tied to the American Revolutionary War. New Providence saw skirmishes and troop movements, and its Presbyterian church served as a hospital for soldiers from both sides of the conflict. The infamous "Watchung Mountains" provided a strategic vantage point for General George Washington's army to monitor British troop movements.

Post-war, New Providence evolved from an agricultural community into a suburban town with the arrival of the railroad in the 19th century. This development brought significant growth and transformed the area into a commuter town for people working in New York City.

Today, New Providence is known for its excellent schools, vibrant community life, and beautiful parks. It has maintained a small-town feel while offering convenient access to modern amenities. The borough's history is celebrated through various community events and preserved historical sites, making it an attractive place for residents who value a strong sense of community and heritage.

For those considering to New Providence, the borough offers a unique blend of historical charm and contemporary living, making it a desirable location for families and professionals alike.
