History of Shelton

Shelton, Connecticut, nestled in Fairfield County, boasts a rich history that dates back to its pre-colonial era. Originally home to the Paugussett Native American tribe, the area was first settled by Europeans around 1639 when it became part of the town of Stratford. It wasn't until 1789 that Shelton, then known as Huntington, became an independent community.

The river's power was harnessed for manufacturing, and the town saw the rise of factories producing goods such as pins, combs, and clocks. The establishment of the Shelton Tack Company in 1855 marked a significant economic development, and the borough of Shelton was incorporated in 1882.
